Questions & Answers about De ska släppa en ny version om en månad.
Why does the sentence use om to say 'in a month'?
In Swedish, when you want to say that something will happen 'in' a certain amount of time in the future, you use the preposition om. English speakers often want to guess i, but i en månad would mean 'for a month' (a duration of time), rather than 'a month from now'.
Does släppa mean 'release'? I thought it meant 'drop' or 'let go'.
You are exactly right! The literal meaning of släppa is to let go or drop. However, just like in English, it is also the standard word used for 'releasing' a new product, song, or software version.
Could we use kommer att instead of ska for this future event?
You could, but ska is the most natural choice here. We use ska when there is a deliberate plan, intention, or promise. Since a company releasing a new version is a planned action, ska släppa fits perfectly. You generally use kommer att for predictions or things outside of your direct control.
Why is the adjective ny here instead of nytt or nya?
Adjectives in Swedish must match the noun they describe. Because the noun is an 'en' word (en version), the adjective takes its basic form, ny. If it were an 'ett' word, it would be nytt, and if it were plural, it would be nya.
