Learn Spanish (Latin America): ¿A quién ayudas hoy?

In Spanish, when the direct receiver of an action is a person, we have to put the word a (often called the personal a) right before them. Since the person you are helping receives the action of the verb ayudar (to help), we must say a quién instead of just quién.

Where is the word for "you" in this sentence?

You do not need it! The verb ayudas ends in -as, which tells us that the subject is tú (the informal "you"). You could say ¿A quién ayudas tú hoy?, but dropping the pronoun is the most common and natural way to speak in Spanish.

Why does quién have an accent mark?

In Spanish, all question words (like qué, cómo, and quién) require an accent mark. This helps tell them apart from the exact same words when they are used to connect ideas in normal statements (like saying "the person who helps").

The translation says "are you helping", but isn't ayudas just "you help"?

The Spanish simple present tense, like ayudas, can translate to both "you help" (a regular routine) and "you are helping" (an action happening around now). Because this sentence includes hoy (today), "are you helping" is the most natural way to translate it into English.
