Learn Spanish (Latin America): ¿Cuál es la casa de tu familia?

In Spanish, when you are asking someone to choose from a group of possibilities (like picking one house out of many on a street), you use cuál (which or which one). Qué is usually used for asking for definitions or when placed directly before a noun.

Why does it say la casa de tu familia instead of using an apostrophe 's'?

Spanish does not use an apostrophe 's' for possession. To say something belongs to someone, you use the formula: the object + de (of) + owner. So, your family's house becomes la casa de tu familia (literally: the house of your family).

Why doesn't the word tu have an accent mark?

Tu without an accent mark means your (as in tu familia). Tú with an accent mark means the pronoun you. Since we are saying your family, we use the version without the accent.

A family has many people. Why do we use singular tu instead of plural tus?

Even though a family is made up of multiple people, the word familia itself is a singular noun (one family). Because the noun is singular, the possessive word matching it must also be singular (tu instead of tus).
