Learn Spanish (Latin America): ¿Te comprometes con él?

In English, we say we get engaged to someone, but in Spanish, the verb comprometerse (to get engaged) always pairs with the preposition con (with). It helps to think of it as "committing yourself with someone." You will see this exact same pattern with casarse con (to get married to).

Why do we need the te at the beginning of the sentence?

The verb here is comprometerse, which is a reflexive verb in this context. The te (yourself) shows that you are making the commitment yourself. If you just used comprometes without the te, it would mean you are compromising or implicating someone else in a problem.

The English translation says "Are you getting engaged", but comprometes is in the simple present tense. Why?

In Spanish, the simple present tense is very flexible and is often used to talk about actions happening right now or in the near future. While you could use the present continuous here (¿Te estás comprometiendo?), using the simple present is much more natural and common for asking "Are you getting engaged?"
