Why do we use es instead of está here?
We use es (from the verb ser) because we are describing the city's fundamental personality or essential character. If you used está (from the verb estar), it would mean the city is only temporarily like that—for example, if it is unusually messy right after a big parade or unusually quiet during a storm.
How does the word así work? Does it literally mean "like that"?
Así is a very useful single word that translates to "like this," "like that," or "this way." Instead of translating "like that" word-for-word into two different Spanish words, you can just use así to describe how something is.
Why is it la ciudad? I thought words ending in a consonant were usually masculine.
While many words ending in consonants like -r or -l are masculine, there is a special rule for words ending in -dad or -tad (like ciudad or universidad). They are almost always feminine, which is why we must use the feminine word for "the," which is la.
Can I change the word order and say Así es la ciudad?
Yes! Spanish word order is very flexible. Saying Así es la ciudad (literally "Like that is the city") is completely correct and is actually a very natural and common way native speakers express this exact thought.
