In Spanish, the verb gustar actually means "to be pleasing to". You use gustan instead of gusta because the things that are pleasing to you are plural: the short stories (los cuentos cortos). Think of it as saying "The short stories are pleasing to me."

Does Me mean "I" in this sentence?

Not exactly! Because gustar works backward compared to English, Me actually means "to me". The stories are the real subject of the sentence, doing the action of being pleasing to you.

Why do we need los? The English translation doesn't say "I like the short stories".

In English, we usually skip the word "the" when talking about things we like in general. In Spanish, however, you must always include the definite article (el, la, los, or las) before the noun when talking about your general likes and dislikes.
