Conocer (to know) is completely regular except for its yo (I) form. Instead of the expected "conoco," it changes to conozco. You will see this special -zco ending for the "I" form in many Spanish verbs that end in a vowel followed by -cer or -cir.

I learned that "to know" is saber. Why are we using conozco here?

Spanish has two different verbs for "to know": conocer and saber. You use conocer when you are familiar or acquainted with a person, place, or thing. Because this sentence is about being familiar with a place (la ciudad), you use conocer. The other verb, saber, is only used for knowing facts, knowing information, or knowing how to do something.

Where is the word for "I" (yo) in this sentence?
