Questions & Answers about Мы боялись шпиона, зато он оказался нашим союзником.
Why is нашим союзником in the Instrumental case here?
The verb оказаться (to turn out to be) describes a state, characteristic, or identity that is revealed. In Russian, this verb requires the noun or adjective that follows it to be in the Instrumental case. Therefore, the nominative наш союзник (our ally) changes to the Instrumental нашим союзником.
Is шпиона in the Accusative or Genitive case here?
It is in the Genitive case. The verb бояться (to be afraid of) always requires its object to be in the Genitive case. Because шпион is an animate masculine noun, its Genitive and Accusative forms look exactly the same (шпиона), but grammatically its case here is dictated by the Genitive rule for this verb.
How does зато differ from standard words for 'but' like но?
зато is more specific than a simple но (but). It translates to 'but on the other hand' or 'but to make up for it'. It is used when contrasting a negative situation (we were afraid) with a positive, compensating outcome (he was actually our ally).
Why do we use the perfective verb оказался instead of the imperfective оказывался?
We use the perfective оказался because discovering his true allegiance is a one-time, completed realization. The imperfective оказывался would imply that he repeatedly or habitually turned out to be our ally across multiple different occasions, which does not fit the context of this single discovery.
