Questions & Answers about Polițistul o fi cercetat crăpătura din perete.
How is the past presumptive o fi cercetat formed here?
It is made of the third-person auxiliary o (which indicates speculation), the invariable infinitive fi (be), and the past participle cercetat (investigated). Together, they express a guess about an action that already happened.
Can I use a different auxiliary word instead of o for the third person?
Yes, you can use va, making it va fi cercetat. The form o is highly common in spoken Romanian for the presumptive mood, while va technically forms the future perfect tense. However, both are used interchangeably to mean exactly the same thing here: speculation about the past.
Why does the Romanian sentence use din (from) instead of în (in) for "in the wall"?
In Romanian, when a noun is a permanent or integrated physical feature of a place, we use din to link it to its location. Because a crack is a physical feature belonging to the wall, it is crăpătura din perete. Using în would sound unnatural, as it usually implies an object temporarily placed inside something else.
