Questions & Answers about Unde se află monumentul?
Why use se află instead of just este?
While este (is) works perfectly fine, a se afla (to be located / to be situated) is a very natural and common way in Romanian to ask about the physical location of buildings, places, or objects.
Why is there a se before află?
The verb a afla by itself means 'to find out' or 'to discover'. To mean 'to be located', it must be used as a reflexive verb: a se afla. The se translates to 'itself', so the sentence literally asks where the monument 'finds itself'.
How is 'the' attached in the word monumentul?
Monument is a neuter noun. In Romanian, to say 'the' for a singular masculine or neuter noun that ends in a consonant, you attach the definite article -ul directly to the end of the word.
How does this question relate to the Genitive case prepositions we are learning?
This is the perfect setup question! To answer where something is located, you will often use compound spatial prepositions like în fața (in front of) or în mijlocul (in the middle of). Just remember that these specific prepositions require the noun that follows them to change into the Genitive case.
