Describing Location
To describe where things are, use the verb a se afla (to be located).
| Where is the monument located? | Unde se află monumentul? |
Compound Prepositions and the Genitive
To give precise locations, Romanian uses compound prepositions. These are built from a simple preposition (like în) and an articulated noun, such as fața (the front), spatele (the back), or mijlocul (the middle).
Because these phrases literally translate as "in the front of" or "in the middle of," the noun that follows them takes the Genitive case.
În mijlocul (In the middle of)
Notice how the noun following în mijlocul takes the standard Genitive ending (e.g., parc becomes parcului, masă becomes mesei).
| The monument is located in the middle of the park. | Monumentul se află în mijlocul parcului. |
| The red vase is in the middle of the table. | Vaza roșie este în mijlocul mesei. |
În spatele (Behind)
Translates to "behind" (literally "in the back of").
| The dog is behind the fence. | Câinele este în spatele gardului. |
| The cat sleeps behind the shelf. | Pisica doarme în spatele raftului. |
În fața (In front of)
Translates to "in front of" (literally "in the face of").
| The armchair is here, in front of the TV. | Fotoliul este aici, în fața televizorului. |
| The bank is located in front of the monument. | Banca se află în fața monumentului. |
