Conversational future tense (am să)

Alongside the o să future tense, Romanian has another popular conversational future using the verb a avea (to have). It often carries a sense of firm intention or personal resolution—perfect for talking about goals and habits.

The formula pairs the present tense of a avea with the subjunctive form of the action verb:

[a avea] + să + [verb]

Unlike o să (where o never changes), you must conjugate a avea to match the subject. The main verb after să also conjugates to match the subject, exactly as it always does in the subjunctive.

Other Subjects

For other subjects, change both the auxiliary and the main verb:

You are going to lose weight, but the effort is very big.
Ai să slăbești, dar efortul este foarte mare.
We are going to make this effort for our life.
Avem să facem acest efort pentru viața noastră.
He is going to give up this habit for a healthy life.

The Negative Form

To make a negative sentence, place nu directly before the conjugated form of a avea.

You didn't go to the gym? Yes I did, I have energy and I will not give up.
Nu ai mers la sală? Ba da, am energie și nu am să renunț.
