Questions & Answers about Discordas da minha ideia. Porquê?
In English we say 'disagree with'. Why is the word 'da' used here instead of 'com'?
This lesson is about using the subjunctive for opinions and denials. Why is there no subjunctive here?
The subjunctive is triggered when expressions of opinion or denial introduce a new clause, usually with que. For example, if you said 'I do not think that you disagree', you would use the subjunctive: Não acho que discordes. However, this sentence is a direct factual statement about a noun (da minha ideia), so the verb stays in the normal present indicative.
Why does 'Porquê' have an accent mark here?
In Portuguese, the word for 'why' is written as porquê (with the circumflex accent) when it stands completely alone as a question or appears at the very end of a sentence. If it were placed at the beginning of the sentence (for example, 'Why do you disagree?'), it would be spelled porque without the accent.
Why do we need the article 'a' inside of 'da'? Couldn't we just say 'de minha ideia'?
In European Portuguese, it is standard and required to use a definite article (like o or a) before a possessive pronoun. Therefore, we must say a minha, and the preposition de merges with that article to form da.
