Questions & Answers about O vento vem do oeste.
Why is it do oeste and not just de oeste?
In Portuguese, cardinal directions like oeste (west) are usually treated as masculine nouns and take the definite article o. Because of this, the preposition de (from) combines with the article o (the) to make the contraction do.
Is vem a regular verb?
No, vem is the highly irregular he/she/it form of the verb vir (to come) in the present tense. It is a very common verb to memorize, especially when talking about where people or things originate from.
If the sentence was plural (The winds come), how would the verb change?
If you said os ventos (the winds), the verb would change to vêm. Notice the circumflex accent on top! In Portuguese, vem is singular (it comes) and vêm is plural (they come). This accent is the only thing showing the difference in writing.
Why isn't oeste capitalized like it sometimes is in English?
In Portuguese, compass directions like oeste (west), norte (north), sul (south), and leste (east) are written with lowercase letters. They are only capitalized if they form part of a proper name, like a specific geographical region.
