Questions & Answers about Falo português e inglês.
Why is there no word for "I" at the beginning of the sentence?
In Portuguese, you don't always need to use subject pronouns like eu (I). The verb ending already tells you who is doing the action. The -o ending in falo makes it clear that "I" am the one speaking.
Why aren't the names of the languages capitalized?
Unlike in English, names of languages and nationalities are written with lowercase letters in Portuguese. That is why you see português and inglês instead of Português and Inglês.
What is the dictionary form of the verb used here?
The dictionary form (the infinitive) is falar, which means "to speak". It is a regular verb, so you just remove the -ar and add -o to make falo (I speak).
How do I know whether to read "e" as "and" or "is"?
The word e without an accent mark means "and" and sounds a bit like the "ee" in "cheese" (in Portugal, often a very short "ih" sound). If it has an accent mark, é, it means "is" and sounds like the "e" in "pet".
