Why does porquê have an accent here, when the lesson teaches the word porque?
When you ask "Why?" all by itself as a single-word question, or when it comes at the very end of a sentence, you must use porquê with the circumflex accent. The word porque (without the accent) is used to mean "because", or to ask "why" at the beginning of a longer sentence.
Do I always need to include Eu? Could I just say Não compreendo?
You can absolutely just say Não compreendo. In Portuguese, the verb ending usually makes the subject clear. Because compreendo ends in -o, we already know it is the "I" form. Including Eu just adds a little emphasis, like clarifying that you personally do not understand.
Where do you put the word não to make a sentence negative?
To make a statement negative in Portuguese, you simply place não directly before the verb. Here, it goes right before compreendo.
What is the dictionary form of the verb compreendo?
The base form (infinitive) is compreender, which means to understand. Like most regular verbs ending in -er, you drop the -er and add -o to make it "I" in the present tense, giving you compreendo.
