A tua casa é grande.

Questions & Answers about A tua casa é grande.

Why do we say A tua instead of just tua? Doesn't that mean 'The your house'?
Literally, yes! In European Portuguese, you almost always put a definite article like o or a (meaning 'the') right before a possessive word. Because casa is feminine, we use the feminine article a.
Does using tua mean the person I am talking to is female?
Not at all! The word tua is feminine because the noun it describes, casa (house), is feminine. In Portuguese, possessive words always match the gender of the object being owned, regardless of the gender of the owner.
Since casa is feminine, why doesn't the adjective grande change to match it?
Adjectives that end in -e, like grande (big) or verde (green), are gender-neutral. They use the exact same form for both masculine and feminine nouns. They only change when the noun is plural (becoming grandes).
Why do we use é for 'is' here instead of está?
We use é (from the verb ser) because the size of a house is considered a permanent characteristic. The verb estar is used for temporary states, so saying está grande would sound strange, as if the house were only temporarily big!
