Questions & Answers about Mesmo que a dança folclórica seja rápida, a coreografia é simples.
Why do we use the subjunctive seja here instead of the indicative é?
The phrase mesmo que (even if / even though) always triggers the subjunctive mood in Portuguese. It introduces a concession, so whether the dance being fast is a known fact or just a hypothetical scenario, the verb must take the subjunctive form.
What is the difference between mesmo que and embora since both trigger the subjunctive?
While both can express a similar idea, mesmo que is much more commonly used for hypothetical situations, carrying the meaning of "even if". Embora is typically reserved for established facts, meaning "even though". In this sentence, mesmo que strongly leans towards the hypothetical "even if the dance is fast".
Why is the indicative é used in the second half of the sentence (a coreografia é simples)?
The subjunctive mood is only triggered within the dependent clause introduced by mesmo que. The main clause (a coreografia é simples) makes a direct statement of fact, so it correctly remains in the indicative mood.
Could we place the adjective before the noun, making it folclórica dança?
No. In Portuguese, classifying adjectives that define a specific, objective category of something—like folclórica (folkloric) or elétrico (electric)—must come directly after the noun.
