In European Portuguese, acabamos (without an accent) is the present tense: "we end up". If it were the past tense ("we ended up"), it would have an acute accent on the second "a": acabámos. This is a very helpful trick to tell them apart in writing!

Why do we need the word por before deixar?

The verb acabar alone usually means "to finish". But when you pair it with the preposition por and an infinitive verb, it creates the fixed phrase acabar por, which means "to end up doing" something. So, acabamos por deixar translates to "we end up leaving".

Since the subject is Nós, why don't we use the Personal Infinitive deixarmos here?
