While most verbs form the future tense by adding endings directly to the infinitive, three very common verbs are irregular: **fazer** (to do / to make), **dizer** (to say / to tell), and **trazer** (to bring).

### Irregular Future Stems

Instead of their full infinitives, these verbs use a shortened stem. However, you will still attach the exact same future endings (**-ei**, **-ás**, **-á**, **-emos**, **-ão**) to these new stems.

### Making Formal Pledges

Because the future indicative sounds formal and absolute, it is the tense of choice for political speeches (*o discurso*), solemn promises, and public declarations. You will often see these verbs used to talk about laws (*a lei*), justice (*a justiça*), and order (*a ordem*).
