While most verbs form the future tense by adding endings directly to the infinitive, three very common verbs are irregular: fazer (to do / to make), dizer (to say / to tell), and trazer (to bring).
Irregular Future Stems
Instead of their full infinitives, these verbs use a shortened stem. However, you will still attach the exact same future endings (-ei, -ás, -á, -emos, -ão) to these new stems.
| Pronoun | fazer (far-) | dizer (dir-) | trazer (trar-) |
|---|---|---|---|
| eu | farei | direi | trarei |
| tu | farás | dirás | trarás |
| ele / ela / você | fará | dirá | trará |
| nós | faremos | diremos | traremos |
| eles / elas / vocês | farão | dirão | trarão |
Here is fazer in action:
| I will do everything for the nation. | Eu farei tudo pela nação. |
| We will make a plan for the future. | Nós faremos um plano para o futuro. |
And the verb dizer:
| The minister will tell the truth in the speech. | O ministro dirá a verdade no discurso. |
| We will tell the whole truth tomorrow. | Nós diremos toda a verdade amanhã. |
Finally, the verb trazer:
| The new law will bring peace and order. | A nova lei trará a paz e a ordem. |
| They will bring security to the city. | Eles trarão segurança à cidade. |
Making Formal Pledges
Because the future indicative sounds formal and absolute, it is the tense of choice for political speeches (o discurso), solemn promises, and public declarations. You will often see these verbs used to talk about laws (a lei), justice (a justiça), and order (a ordem).
To make a strong commitment, you can pair these future forms with verbs like jurar (to swear) and cumprir (to fulfill):
| I swear that I will do everything for the nation. | Eu juro que farei tudo pela nação. |
| The king will tell the truth and bring justice and order. | O rei dirá a verdade e trará a justiça e a ordem. |
