Questions & Answers about Modelki czekają na to, żeby pokaz wreszcie się zaczął.
Why do we need the words na to before żeby?
In Polish, the verb czekać (to wait) connects to its object with the preposition na followed by the Accusative case. You cannot attach a żeby clause directly to a preposition. Instead, you use the pronoun to as a bridge. Since na requires the Accusative, we use the Accusative form of to, which is simply to.
Why is the verb zaczął in the past tense if the show hasn't started yet?
The conjunction żeby always forces the verb in its clause to be in either the past tense or the infinitive. Because the second clause has its own specific subject (pokaz), we must use the past tense zaczął. Even though the show will start in the future, the strict grammatical rule for żeby overrides the logical time.
Could we put się at the very end of the sentence, like żeby pokaz wreszcie zaczął się?
It is grammatically possible, but Polish speakers strongly prefer not to put the reflexive pronoun się at the absolute end of a sentence if they can avoid it. Tucking it before the verb (się zaczął) sounds much more natural.
Why does the verb zaczął take a masculine ending here?
