Questions & Answers about Uważaj, to jest bardzo drogi komputer!
How do we get the command uważaj from the dictionary form?
Uważaj comes from the verb uważać (to pay attention / watch out). To make a command for one person, we usually look at the they form of the present tense, which is uważają. Drop the -ą at the end, and you are left with the imperative form: uważaj.
If I am talking to a group of people, how do I change uważaj?
To give a command to multiple people, you simply take the singular command and add -cie. So, uważaj (watch out - to one person) becomes uważajcie (watch out - to two or more people).
Why are drogi and komputer in the basic dictionary case (Nominative)? Don't we use the Instrumental case after the verb jest?
You only use the Instrumental case after jest when you are describing what a specific person or thing is (like saying My brother is a doctor). However, when you use the pointing phrase to jest (this is / it is), the adjective and noun that follow it always stay in the basic Nominative case.
Can I use uważaj to mean be careful too?
Exactly! The verb uważać covers paying attention, watching out, and being careful. You will hear uważaj used as a sudden warning, but also as a friendly reminder to take care or be safe.
