Questions & Answers about Potrzebuję dziurkacza i drukarki, żeby przygotować te dokumenty.
How does the ending -acz in dziurkacz work to mean a hole puncher?
The suffix -acz is commonly added to verbs or nouns to create a word for a tool or a person performing an action. Here, it connects to the noun dziurka (a little hole) or the verb dziurkować (to punch holes). So, a dziurkacz is literally a hole-maker.
Why does the genitive of dziurkacz end in -a (dziurkacza) instead of -u? Isn't it an inanimate object?
It is inanimate, but Polish has a special rule for many tools and instruments ending in -acz. Even though they are non-living objects, their masculine genitive singular ending is usually -a, mirroring animate nouns. This is why we say potrzebuję dziurkacza, rather than dziurkaczu.
Does the -arka ending in drukarki also signify a tool or machine?
Yes! The suffix -arka is typically used to form feminine nouns for machines or appliances that do a specific job. It comes from the root of drukować (to print), making drukarka the machine that prints. Other common examples you might know are zmywarka (dishwasher) and suszarka (dryer).
Just as a refresher, why are both dziurkacza and drukarki in the genitive case here?
They are the objects of the verb potrzebować (to need). In Polish, the thing you need must always take the genitive case, not the standard accusative case you use for most direct objects.
