Questions & Answers about Wziąłem klucz i wyszedłem z domu.
Why is it wziąłem and not wzięłem, given the infinitive is wziąć?
The verb wziąć (to take) has a tricky past tense that changes based on gender. For a male speaker, the nasal vowel remains an ą, making it wziąłem. If a female was speaking, the nasal vowel softens to an ę sound, making it wzięłam.
Why doesn't the word klucz change its ending here since it is the direct object?
Klucz (key) is a masculine inanimate noun. In Polish, the accusative case (used for direct objects) for masculine inanimate nouns is identical to the basic nominative dictionary form. If you took a masculine animate noun like a dog (pies), it would take an ending and become psa.
How is wyszedłem built? I know the basic verb for going on foot is iść.
Wyszedłem is the past tense of wyjść (to go out / to leave). It combines the prefix wy- (out) with the irregular masculine past tense of going on foot (szedłem). If a woman were speaking, she would say wyszłam. Notice how the extra "e" disappears in the feminine form!
Why do we use z domu instead of od domu to mean "from the house"?
