Questions & Answers about Il gufo osserva il pipistrello prima di cacciare.
Why doesn't this sentence use the substantivized infinitive il cacciare after prima di?
Because the fixed expression prima di (before doing something) always takes a bare infinitive without an article. You use a substantivized infinitive with il to talk about an action as a general noun subject, like Il cacciare richiede pazienza (Hunting requires patience), but you must drop the article in prepositional phrases like prima di or senza.
What if the owl observes the bat before the bat hunts?
Because the person or animal doing the hunting is now different from the one observing, you can no longer use prima di + infinitive. You must use prima che followed by the subjunctive: Il gufo osserva il pipistrello prima che cacci. Remembering when to switch from the infinitive to the subjunctive is a key B2 skill!
Does osservare ever need a preposition before its object?
No, osservare is a direct transitive verb, meaning it connects directly to its object. Just like in English, you say osserva il pipistrello (observes the bat), never osserva al pipistrello.
I previously learned the word civetta for owl. Why use gufo here?
