- They agree with the gender of the **possessed object**, not the owner.
- They are almost always preceded by a definite article (**il** or **la**).

Here are the singular forms:

In English, we choose "his" or "her" based on the owner. In Italian, **il suo** and **la sua** depend *only* on the gender of the object. 

For example, **il suo posto** is always masculine because the noun **posto** is masculine—even if the seat belongs to a woman.
