Questions & Answers about Ég fer beint heim eftir vinnu.
Why does the sentence use heim instead of heima?
Heim implies movement towards a destination. Because the verb fer (go) shows motion, we use heim. If you were already resting at your house, you would use the stationary word heima.
Why is the word for work vinnu here instead of its dictionary form vinna?
The preposition eftir forces the noun that follows it into a specific grammatical case. When eftir means after in terms of time, it requires the dative case. For the feminine noun vinna, the dative form is vinnu.
How does the word beint work here?
It acts as an adverb meaning straight or directly. In Icelandic, it is very common to take the neuter form of an adjective, like the word beinn here, and use it as an adverb to describe how an action is done.
