Questions & Answers about Ben ve arkadaşım parkta uçurtma uçuruyoruz.
What does the suffix in parkta mean, and why is it -ta instead of -da?
It’s the locative case, meaning in/at/on. The locative is -DA/-DE, but after a voiceless consonant (p, ç, t, k, f, s, ş, h), the d devoices to t, so you get -TA/-TE. Since park ends with voiceless k, you say parkta. Vowel harmony also applies: the last vowel in park is a, so you choose -ta (not -te).
Why is there no word for “a” before uçurtma?
Turkish has no articles. Indefinite objects are left bare, so uçurtma can mean a kite. Definiteness is usually shown by context or by case-marking (see the next question).
When would I use uçurtmayı instead of uçurtma?
Use the accusative (-ı/-i/-u/-ü) for a specific/known object. Uçurtmayı = the kite. For example: Dün aldığımız uçurtmayı parkta uçuruyoruz (We’re flying the kite we bought yesterday). Formed as uçurtma + y + ı.
Why is it uçuruyoruz and not uçuyoruz?
Because uçmak = to fly (intransitive), while uçurmak = to make something fly (causative, transitive). We don’t “fly” ourselves; we make the kite fly. So: (we’re flying a kite), not . If the kite is the subject, you’d say (The kite is flying).
