Why do we say у меня есть карта instead of something like я имею карту to mean “I have a card”?

In Russian, the normal way to say I have X is with the construction:

• у + [person in genitive] + есть + [thing in nominative]
  
  • у меня есть карта – I have a card
  • у него есть дом – he has a house

The verb иметь (to have) exists, but я имею карту sounds unnatural in everyday speech. Иметь is used mostly in more formal or fixed expressions, like:

• иметь право – to have the right
• иметь возможность – to have the opportunity

So for ordinary possession of objects (card, car, phone, etc.), native speakers almost always use у меня есть, у тебя есть, у него есть, etc., not я имею.

What exactly does карта mean here? Isn’t карта usually “map”?
