Questions & Answers about Я хочу переехать в другой город.
Why is it “в другой город” and not “в другом городе”?
Because motion toward a destination uses в + accusative. Here, город is masculine inanimate, so its accusative equals the nominative: в друго́й го́род. For location (no movement), you use the prepositional: в друго́м го́роде.
- Movement: Я хочу́ перее́хать в друго́й го́род.
- Location: Я живу́ в друго́м го́роде.
Why is the perfective infinitive “переехать” used after “хочу”? Can I say “переезжать”?
With verbs of desire like хочу, both aspects are possible, but they mean different things:
- Хочу перее́хать (perfective) = I want to make one completed move (a single relocation).
- Хочу перее́зжать (imperfective) = I want to be moving around/relocating repeatedly or as an ongoing process. This is unusual unless you mean it as a recurring action.
What’s the difference between “переехать” and “ехать/поехать”?
- Переехать = to relocate (change one’s place of residence).
- Ехать/поехать = to go/travel (by vehicle), not necessarily to move house. Examples:
- Я пое́ду в друго́й го́род. I’ll go to another city (a trip).
- Я перееду в друго́й го́род. I’ll move to another city (to live there).
