Why is it tölum and not tala?
Tölum is the present tense form of the verb tala (to speak / to talk) for first person plural (we).
Present tense of tala:
- ég tala – I speak
- þú talar – you (sing.) speak
- hann / hún / það talar – he / she / it speaks
- við tölum – we speak
- þið talið – you (pl.) speak
- þeir / þær / þau tala – they speak
So with við (we), the correct form is tölum, not tala.
The vowel change a → ö plus the ending -um is just how this verb behaves in the 1st person plural.
