Why is the verb schrijf placed before ik in Elke maand schrijf ik…?
Dutch is a V2 (verb-second) language. When you start a sentence with anything other than the subject (here Elke maand), the finite verb must come in second position, so the subject ik moves to third.
Could I say Ik schrijf elke maand… instead?
Yes. If the subject ik comes first, you don’t invert:
Ik schrijf elke maand een korte nieuwsbrief voor onze vrienden.
Both orders are correct; you only invert when a time or place phrase opens the sentence.
What’s the difference between elke and iedere? Could I say Iedere maand?
Both mean “each” or “every” and are largely interchangeable. Iedere maand schrijf ik… works just as well as Elke maand schrijf ik…, with no significant change in meaning.
Why is it een korte nieuwsbrief and not een kort nieuwsbrief?
Nieuwsbrief is a de-word (common gender). After the indefinite article een, adjectives get an -e ending in front of de-words and definite nouns (singular or plural). Hence een korte nieuwsbrief.
How do I know that nieuwsbrief is a de-word?
You usually look it up in a dictionary, which will show de nieuwsbrief. As a rule of thumb, many nouns ending in -ing, -schap, -heid or compounds with those are de-words.
Why do we say onze vrienden and not ons vrienden?
Onze is used with all plural nouns and with singular de-words; ons is only for singular het-words. Since vrienden is a plural de-word, you must use onze.
Why is the noun maand singular after elke? Why not elke maanden?
In Dutch, elk(e) always takes a singular noun: elke maand. You cannot pluralize it to elke maanden. If you need plural, you’d rephrase, e.g. elke paar maanden (“every couple of months”).
Why is the preposition voor used in voor onze vrienden and not aan?
Voor indicates the newsletter is intended for your friends (it’s “for” them). Aan means “to” them, focusing on the act of sending. You could say Ik stuur een nieuwsbrief aan onze vrienden, but when you simply want to express the newsletter’s purpose or audience, you choose voor.
