Questions & Answers about Die dritte Dimension fehlt in diesem Bild.
Is the word in here related to the negative prefix in- that we are learning about?
No, they just happen to look the same! The in in this sentence is a standard two-way preposition indicating location. The negative prefix in- (as seen in words like inaktiv or intolerant) is a completely different element borrowed from Latin that attaches directly to the beginning of adjectives.
Could I use an adjective with a negative prefix here instead of the verb fehlen?
You could technically say the dimension is inexistent (nonexistent), but using the verb fehlen (to be missing or to lack) is overwhelmingly more natural and common in everyday German. It is the standard way to express that a necessary part of something is absent.
Why is the dative case used for in diesem Bild?
The word in is a two-way preposition, meaning it can take either the accusative or the dative case depending on the context. Because the missing dimension describes a static state within the picture (answering the question 'where?' rather than 'to where?'), it triggers the dative case. Since Bild is a neuter noun, the demonstrative pronoun becomes diesem.
Why does the ordinal number dritte end in -e?
Ordinal numbers like dritte (third) follow the exact same declension rules as normal adjectives. Here, it describes a feminine noun (Dimension) in the nominative case. Because it comes right after the definite article die, it takes the standard weak adjective ending -e.
