Questions & Answers about Sei es das Zifferblatt oder der Zeiger, alles wurde gereinigt.
What grammatical form is Sei es, and how does it work in this phrase?
Sei is the Konjunktiv I (Subjunctive I) form of sein. In this fixed expression, it literally means "be it" and functions exactly like the English "whether it be... or...". It is used to show that no matter which of the listed alternatives applies, the outcome remains the same.
If I wanted to talk about multiple dials or hands, would I still use Sei es?
No, you would need to change the verb to match the plural subject. Instead of Sei es, you must use Seien es. For example: Seien es die Zifferblätter oder die Zeiger (Whether it be the dials or the hands).
Why doesn't the main clause invert its word order to wurde alles gereinigt after the comma?
Normally, starting a sentence with a subordinate clause pushes the verb to the first position of the main clause. However, the sei es ... oder ... structure acts more like an independent tag or an introductory list rather than a true subordinate clause. Because of this, the main clause keeps its standard word order: subject (alles), then verb (wurde).
Quick refresher: why is it wurde gereinigt and not war gereinigt?
wurde gereinigt is the process passive (Vorgangspassiv) in the simple past, focusing on the actual action of someone cleaning the clock parts. If you used war gereinigt, it would be the state passive (Zustandspassiv), which only describes the condition after the fact (everything was merely in a clean state).
