Questions & Answers about Ich bleibe zu Hause, es sei denn, dass der Schauer schnell endet.
Why is the verb endet at the very end of the sentence?
The phrase es sei denn, dass translates to "unless". Because it includes the subordinating conjunction dass, it acts as a subordinate clause and kicks the conjugated verb (endet) to the very end.
Could I drop the word dass in this sentence? How would that change the word order?
Yes, you can drop dass. If you just use es sei denn, the clause functions like a main clause, and the conjugated verb takes the second position. The sentence would become: Ich bleibe zu Hause, es sei denn, der Schauer endet schnell. Both versions mean the exact same thing, but the version without dass is more common in spoken German.
What verb form is sei in the phrase es sei denn?
sei is the Konjunktiv I (Subjunctive I) form of sein (to be). The phrase es sei denn is an old, fixed expression that literally means something like "unless it be the case". You don't need to worry about the subjunctive grammar here; just treat es sei denn as a fixed vocabulary block.
Does Schauer refer to the weather, or can I use it for taking a shower in the bathroom?
In this sentence, der Schauer specifically refers to a brief spell of weather, like a rain shower (der Regenschauer). If you want to talk about the shower in your bathroom, you must use die Dusche, and the verb for taking a shower is sich duschen.
