Questions & Answers about Der Gast schreibt eine Bewertung, zumal die Wartezeit extrem ist.
Why is the verb ist at the very end of the sentence?
The word zumal (especially since) is a subordinating conjunction. This means it introduces a dependent clause and pushes the conjugated verb (ist) to the very end, just like weil or dass would.
What is the difference between using zumal and a word like weil or da here?
While weil and da simply mean 'because' or 'since', zumal specifically translates to 'especially since' or 'particularly as'. It introduces an additional, compelling reason that makes the guest's action (writing a review) even more understandable.
Could I use Rezension instead of Bewertung for the word 'review'?
Yes, but they have slightly different nuances. A Bewertung is generally a rating or a shorter evaluation, such as leaving stars and a brief comment for a restaurant or hotel. A Rezension implies a longer, more thoughtful written critique, like a book or film review. Given the context of extreme waiting times, Bewertung fits perfectly.
Can the zumal clause come at the beginning of the sentence?
Absolutely! If you want to emphasize the extreme waiting time, you can put the subordinate clause first. Just remember that the main clause will then start with the verb to maintain the V2 (verb-second) rule: Zumal die Wartezeit extrem ist, schreibt der Gast eine Bewertung.
