Questions & Answers about Ich suche irgendwen, der das heimlich gemacht hat.
Why is irgendwen used here instead of irgendwer?
irgendwen is the accusative form of the indefinite pronoun irgendwer (someone/anyone). It is in the accusative case here because it is the direct object of the verb suchen (to look for) — you are looking for someone.
Could I use irgendjemanden instead of irgendwen in this sentence?
Yes, absolutely! irgendwen and irgendjemanden mean the exact same thing ("someone" or "anyone" in the accusative case) and are perfectly interchangeable. irgendwen is just a slightly shorter alternative that is very popular in everyday spoken German.
If irgendwen refers to an unspecified person of any gender, why does the sentence use the masculine relative pronoun der?
Even though irgendwer refers to a person whose gender is unknown or irrelevant, the word itself is grammatically masculine singular. Therefore, any relative pronoun pointing back to it must also take the masculine form. Here, der is masculine to match irgendwen, and it is in the nominative case because it acts as the subject of the relative clause (der das ... gemacht hat).
