Questions & Answers about Der Algorithmus zeigt denjenigen den Beitrag an, die ihn mögen.
Why is it denjenigen and not diejenigen here?
The verb anzeigen (to display/show to) takes a dative object for the person being shown something. Since we are talking about plural "those", we need the dative plural form. Both halves of the word change: die becomes den, and jenige gets an -n, resulting in denjenigen.
If denjenigen is dative, why is the relative pronoun die instead of denen?
A relative pronoun takes its gender and number from the word it points to, but its case depends on its own role inside the relative clause. In the phrase die ihn mögen (who like it), "who" is the subject performing the action. Therefore, it has to be in the nominative case (die).
Why do we use ihn for "it" at the end of the sentence?
In German, pronouns must match the grammatical gender of the noun they replace. Here, ihn refers back to den Beitrag (the post). Because Beitrag is a masculine noun and is the direct object (accusative) of the verb mögen, it becomes ihn.
Why is the prefix an right before the comma, rather than at the very end of the sentence?
