Questions & Answers about Er ist sehr extrovertiert, jedoch braucht er heute keine Aufmerksamkeit.
Why is the word order jedoch braucht er and not jedoch er braucht?
Jedoch (however) is an adverbial connector, not a coordinating conjunction like aber (but). Because it sits in position 1 of the second clause, the verb braucht must take position 2. This pushes the subject er to position 3.
Could I put jedoch somewhere else in the sentence?
Yes! Adverbial connectors are flexible. You could put the subject first and say er braucht jedoch heute keine Aufmerksamkeit. In that case, er takes position 1, the verb braucht stays in position 2, and jedoch simply moves after the verb.
Why do we use keine here instead of nicht?
We use keine because we are negating the noun Aufmerksamkeit (attention). You always use a form of kein to negate nouns that have either an indefinite article or no article at all. Nicht is used to negate verbs, adjectives, or entire phrases.
Why does heute come before keine Aufmerksamkeit?
In German, expressions of time like heute (today) usually appear as early as possible after the verb and subject. The noun object, especially a negated one like keine Aufmerksamkeit, sits at the end of the clause.
