Questions & Answers about Die Sitte, die ich dir gerade erkläre, ist sehr wichtig.
Why are there two dies right next to each other in Die Sitte, die...?
The first Die is the regular article for the feminine noun Sitte (the custom). The second die is a relative pronoun meaning "that" or "which". It is also feminine to match Sitte.
Why does the verb ist come right after the comma?
The entire phrase Die Sitte, die ich dir gerade erkläre acts as the subject of the main sentence. In a German main clause, the conjugated verb must be in the second position. The whole complex subject counts as position one, so the verb ist comes immediately after the comma.
Why is it dir instead of dich here?
The verb erklären (to explain) takes a direct object for the thing being explained, and a dative object for the person it is explained to. Because you are explaining the custom to someone, you use the dative pronoun dir.
What does gerade mean here? Doesn't it mean "straight"?
While gerade can mean "straight," in this context it is an adverb of time meaning "right now" or "currently." It emphasizes that the action is happening at this very moment.
This lesson is about nämlich. How could I use it here to explain why the custom is important?
The particle nämlich (you see / namely) explains the reason for a previous statement, so you wouldn't put it in this exact sentence. Instead, you would use it in a follow-up sentence. For example: Sie rettet nämlich Leben. (Because it saves lives, you see.)
