Learn German: Ich komme zum Training, weil ich das neue Gerät ausprobiere. - I am coming to training because I am trying out the new machine.

The word weil (because) starts a subordinate clause, which forces the conjugated verb to the very end. Normally, a separable verb like ausprobieren (to try out) splits into two parts in a main clause (for example: ich probiere das Gerät aus). However, when a subordinate clause pushes the verb to the end of the sentence, the prefix (aus-) and the main verb (-probiere) reattach and are written together as a single word.

Why do we say zum Training instead of just zu Training?

The word zum is a required contraction of the preposition zu and the article dem. The preposition zu always forces the following noun into the dative case. Because Training is a neuter noun (das Training), its dative form is dem Training. Instead of saying zu dem Training, German speakers shorten it to zum Training.

Since Gerät is a neuter noun, why is it das neue Gerät and not das neues Gerät?
