Questions & Answers about Es ist Mittag und ich habe Hunger.
Why do we use habe (have) instead of bin (am) to say I am hungry?
In German, you usually don't say I am hungry using an adjective. Instead, you literally say I have hunger (ich habe Hunger). Hunger is a noun, which is why it is capitalized. You do the exact same thing with thirst: ich habe Durst.
Can I say Es ist zwölf Uhr instead of Es ist Mittag?
Yes! Mittag literally means midday or noon. If you want to focus on the time on the clock, you can absolutely say Es ist zwölf Uhr (It is twelve o'clock). Both are perfectly natural ways to describe 12:00 PM.
If Mittag is noon, how do I say midnight?
Midnight is Mitternacht. Just like with Mittag, you don't use the word Uhr (o'clock) with it. You can simply say Es ist Mitternacht.
Why is the word order completely normal after und?
The word und (and) is a connecting word that does not mess with the word order of the sentence that follows it. It sits at what we call position zero, so the second half of the sentence just starts normally with the subject (ich) followed by the verb (habe).
