Why is the verb haben after wir instead of right after denn?
denn (because) is a coordinating conjunction, which means it takes "Position 0". We do not count it when figuring out where the verb goes. After denn, we start counting from 1 again: wir is in position 1, and the verb haben stays in its normal spot at position 2.
I have heard the German word for "because" is weil. Are denn and weil the same?
Both denn and weil mean "because", but they behave differently. denn is much easier to use right now because it lets you keep the normal word order. If you used weil, it would force the verb haben to the very end of the sentence. Sticking with denn makes sentence building much simpler at this level!
