### The Accusative Case: Direct Objects

In German, the role a noun plays in a sentence is shown by its "case". The subject of the sentence (the person or thing doing the action) takes the **nominative** case.

When a noun is the direct object—meaning it receives the action of the verb—it takes the **accusative** case. For example, in "We are looking for the office", "we" is the subject (nominative) and "the office" is the direct object (accusative).

### Neuter, Feminine, and Plural Articles

For neuter, feminine, and plural nouns, the definite article ("the") stays exactly the same in the accusative case: **das**, **die**, and **die**.

### Masculine Articles: From *der* to *den*

The only definite article that changes in the accusative case is the masculine one. When a masculine noun becomes a direct object, **der** changes to **den**.
