Questions & Answers about Je crois que le forum n'existe plus.
Since this lesson covers the subjunctive with phrases like aimer que, why does Je crois que use the regular indicative verb existe?
Even though believing sounds like a subjective feeling, affirmative statements with croire que (to believe that) and penser que (to think that) express a certainty or reality in the speaker's mind in French. Therefore, they take the indicative. However, if the sentence were negative or a question (like Je ne crois pas que...), it would introduce doubt and then require the subjunctive!
Where is the pas in this sentence's negation?
The structure ne ... plus means 'no longer' or 'not anymore', and it completely replaces the standard ne ... pas. Just like standard negation, the two pieces surround the conjugated verb: ne (which shrinks to n' before a vowel) + existe + plus.
Should I pronounce the 's' at the end of plus here?
No. When plus is used in a negative structure like ne ... plus (meaning 'no longer'), the final 's' is completely silent. You generally only pronounce the 's' when plus means 'more'.
Can I drop the que and just say Je crois le forum n'existe plus like we often drop 'that' in English?
