Questions & Answers about Un événement important vient de se passer.
How does vient de translate to "just" here?
This sentence uses the "recent past" structure. To say something just happened, you use the conjugated verb venir (to come) followed by de and an infinitive verb. Here, Un événement is the subject, so we use the third-person form vient. Literally, it is like saying "An important event comes from happening."
Why is the verb se passer instead of just passer?
By itself, passer usually means "to pass" (like time passing or passing by a place). When you add the pronoun se to make it the reflexive verb se passer, the meaning changes to "to happen" or "to take place."
Does the se in se passer ever change in this "recent past" structure?
Yes! Even though the main verb passer stays in its dictionary form (the infinitive) after venir de, the pronoun se still has to match the subject. Because Un événement is a third-person subject (like "he" or "it"), the matching pronoun is se. If the subject were "I" (je), it would change to me (for example, Je viens de me réveiller - I just woke up).
Why is important placed after événement?
