Vous n'avez pas de monnaie ?

Questions & Answers about Vous n'avez pas de monnaie ?

Why is it pas de and not pas de la since monnaie is feminine?
When you completely negate a quantity, partitive articles like de la (some) change to just de (any/none). If you had some change, you would say Vous avez de la monnaie. But because you don't have any at all, the absolute negation rule kicks in and it becomes Vous n'avez pas de monnaie.
Wait, doesn't monnaie mean money?
It looks like it, but monnaie usually means loose change, coins, or a specific currency. If you want to talk about money in general, you would use the word argent.
Why is it n'avez instead of ne avez?
In French, when a short word like ne is followed immediately by a word starting with a vowel (like avez), the e is dropped and replaced with an apostrophe. This is called elision, and it makes the sentence flow better when spoken.
Why is this a question if it doesn't use est-ce que or swap the words around?
In everyday spoken French, you can turn a regular statement into a question just by raising the pitch of your voice at the end. You could say Est-ce que vous n'avez pas de monnaie ?, but simply using a question mark and a rising tone is very common and natural.
