J'écoute une vieille histoire vraie.

From Lesson 27:Adjective placement·French

Questions & Answers about J'écoute une vieille histoire vraie.

Why is vieille before the noun but vraie is after it?
Most French adjectives go after the noun they describe, which is why vraie (true) comes after histoire (story). However, a short list of common adjectives describing Beauty, Age, Goodness, and Size go before the noun. Vieille (old) describes age, so it comes before!
The English translation says "listening to", but where is the word for "to" in French?
The French verb écouter translates to "to listen to". The "to" is already built into the verb itself! Because of this, you don't need to add an extra connecting word—you just place the thing you are listening to directly after the verb.
Why is the word for "old" vieille here instead of vieux?
Adjectives must match the gender of the noun they describe. Histoire (story) is a feminine noun, which you can see from the word une. Therefore, we must use the feminine form vieille instead of the masculine form vieux. This is also why we use the feminine vraie instead of the masculine vrai.
Why is it written as J'écoute instead of Je écoute?
When the pronoun je (I) comes right before a word that starts with a vowel or a silent 'h', it drops its e and attaches to the next word with an apostrophe. Since écoute starts with an é, je becomes j' to make the phrase smoother to say.
