Does Il y a translate word-for-word to "There is"?
Not exactly! It is a fixed phrase that literally means "It there has" (il = it, y = there, a = has). However, you should always treat it as a single chunk meaning "There is" or "There are."
Why doesn't Il y a change if we are talking about multiple things, like trees?
